Rapid City: The Heart of the Black Hills

Rapid City, that’s the jumping-off point for exploring the Black Hills. Anyway, you find it has a welcoming vibe that kinda grows on you. It’s very easy to find places to stay, eat, and see a bit of local culture. What should you absolutely not miss? Main Street Square, that’s got to be on your list; often there are events happening there, like concerts or seasonal festivals. Speaking of history, there’s The Journey Museum & Learning Center, which brings together the stories of the Black Hills region. And of course, you, your family, you gotta see Dinosaur Park! You know, giant concrete dinosaurs overlooking the city.

If you enjoy exploring a little bit, and it’s something I like to do, check out Art Alley downtown. Apparently, artists have turned a regular alley into this seriously amazing place full of colorful, constantly changing art. I mean it’s got spray paint and all kinds of artistic energy. You can enjoy some very cool local places to eat here too, and even sample South Dakota wines. Plus, very near Rapid City, you find Bear Country USA, which is this drive-through wildlife park. So, there’s the chance to observe bears and other North American animals very safely and comfortably from your car.

Where to Stay and Eat in Rapid City

When it comes to places to rest your head, that’s to say sleeping, Rapid City is alright, it has all sorts of options, from known hotel chains to unique, locally owned bed and breakfasts. Actually, downtown spots put you super close to the city’s activities, restaurants, and cool shops. Looking at food, the city, as a matter of fact, has everything you might want, from burger joints to fancier spots where you can enjoy the local fare. Here’s one place: Firehouse Brewing Company. In other words, it offers great meals along with brews made right there. Another place that folks say is very good is Dakotah Steakhouse, where you find great cuts of meat. Oh, and I want to mention Murphy’s Pub & Grill as well – super laid-back for something comfortable. So, I hear!

Devils Tower: A Monumental Stop

Alright, get ready, because Devils Tower will completely stop you in your tracks; it rises above the plains of Wyoming, and you could call it almost alien-looking! From Rapid City, it’s approximately a 2-hour drive going west, through scenic landscapes. Basically, the Tower isn’t something you just look at; it’s an experience that ties you to the geology and history of the Plains. Basically, a monument to see and learn.

When you reach the park, anyway, do hit the visitor center. Apparently, it shows what the Tower means to the Native American tribes around that area and it has pretty neat displays. The tower itself has legends attached to it from numerous tribes and these, in a way, tie into its significance. And for those into a little light hiking, as I was saying, you could walk the Tower Trail, that goes around the monument itself. It will be nice and leisurely so you can pause a lot, enjoy nature, and read some signs along the trail describing plants, animals, and history.

Activities Around Devils Tower

Rock climbers? Absolutely flock to this place. Arguably, the Tower is known all over as one of the premier places for climbers. Even if you’re not scaling its sides, watching those brave folks tackle that giant rock can be very exciting! Basically, I felt excited, and I wasn’t even doing it!

By the way, if being outside is kinda your jam, you could camp out in the campground that is located near Devils Tower. Stargazing around there, basically away from any city lights, makes the night sky burst open in a fantastic light show! It might even be something that will blow your mind, very literally.

Spearfish Canyon: A Scenic Drive

Alright, want scenery that kind of takes your breath away? It might, too. I tell you what, Spearfish Canyon does just that! Conveniently located in the Northern Black Hills, not too far from I-90, it delivers amazing beauty every single turn you take. Actually, there are waterfalls that jump out from almost nowhere; huge rock formations that give you a perspective of how big everything really is; plus all kinds of nature right beside the road, so you won’t have to look too hard to see something new. The route is pretty straightforward, so it is almost guaranteed that you won’t miss much!

The scenic drive here, for me at least, that, is the big attraction, by the way. Anyway, you drive along a winding road that parallels Spearfish Creek. Very, very beautiful at every turn. During autumn the changing leaves splash an extra colorful scene, too. During the winter time? Totally a wonderland.

Hiking and Waterfalls in Spearfish Canyon

Now, you see, if stepping out to do some light hiking is what you feel like, then as a matter of fact Spearfish Canyon won’t disappoint, either. There are trailheads to awesome waterfalls, and some easy hikes that meander near Spearfish Creek. Let’s quickly talk about those. Roughlock Falls is one I enjoyed seeing because you don’t even have to walk very far to appreciate its full beauty! This spot is perfect too if you are bringing little kids because the path isn’t difficult. Did I say I saw the namesake spearfish, though?

Oh, and a bit of a hidden jewel, that’s Bridal Veil Falls. It’s literally cascading down the canyon wall to create a gorgeous view, which in some respects might look like you’re dreaming. And I want to make sure I mention that Community Cave isn’t too far away either, and well, this easy hike takes you right up into, that’s correct, a very big cave where the sides have huge openings, so it’s also called Elmore.
